2016 Boys Coaches
North Head Coach – Tom MacDonald (Sacred Heart High School)
The 2015-2016 season is Tom MacDonald’s 4th season as Head Coach of the Sacred Heart hockey program. During his inaugural season, 2012-13, the Saints missed the state tournament with a 9- 11 record and Tom was named Mayflower Conference Coach of the Year. During Coach MacDonald’s second season, 2013-14, the Saints had a very successful campaign and made the State tournament for the first time. The Saints also finished second in the Mayflower Conference and Tom was again named Mayflower Conference Coach of the Year for the second straight season. This past season, The Saints won the Mayflower Conference championship before falling in the first round of the first round of the MIAA tournament. The Saints, under Coach Macdonald’s tutelage is looking forward to a fourth consecutive successful season.
Coach MacDonald came to the Sacred Heart with a plethora of coaching experience. Before joining the Saints, Tom was an assistant coached with NCAA III Nationally ranked Curry College for ten years from 2001 through 2011. Tom helped guide the Colonials to three ECAC league Championships along with four NCAA appearances. Before joining the Colonels, Tom coached junior hockey for eight years from 1993 through 2001. He was an assistant for two years with the Rhode Island Sharks, three years for the Bridgewater Bandits, and also head coach for one year with the Bay State Breakers Junior Team in the EJHL. Tom also spent two years as head coach of the Quincy Junior Rangers’ IJHL team. He has also coached many local leagues and hockey camps including the MBHL, EHF, High Schools, and Mike Sullivan’s hockey camps. In addition to coaching at Sacred Heart, Tom is currently the Head Coach of the Tier 1 Boys U18 Bay State Breakers team and Director of the Bay State Breakers Youth and Girls Programs. Tom is certified USA Hockey Level 4 coach and for the second year in a row is an instructor for USA Hockey’s Coaching Education System within the Massachusetts District.
Tom graduated from Salem State College in 1992 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education & Health in 1992. A one-year letterman at UMass Boston and three-year letterman at Salem State College, Tom participated on four nationally ranked Division III hockey teams. While playing with the UMass Beacons, he was named ECAC “Player of The Week” three times and “Player of the Month” once.
Tom currently resides on the South Shore with his lovely wife Diana and his young daughter Kaitlyn
South Coach – Erik Kaplan (Natick High School)
Coach Kaplan is in his 2nd year as Boys Head Varsity Hockey Coach at Natick High School. Prior to that he had been the JV Head Coach in Natick for 6 years. He has coached at all levels in youth hockey over the course of the past 16 years. He is the sole founder of the Natick Boys Middle School Hockey Program which is currently in its 9th season. Coach Kaplan has also been an assistant coach on Team MA which travels to MN for National Invitational Tournaments. Coach Kaplan owns a successful landscape company and lives in Natick.
